BIO HIGHLIGHTS

Songstress Kim Black was born in Detroit, MI. Her family moved to the Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia area where she was educated and attended Georgetown University. 

Kim is known for her “Chaka” vocals, appearance, the complete package. These attributes have made “Masterjam featuring Kim Black: A Rufus & Chaka Khan Experience,” the DMV’s premier Rufus & Chaka tribute, a R&V Live Entertainment Production venture. She has a range of musical experience with R&B, funk, jazz, and classical.  She’s opened for jazz festivals featuring Marcus Johnson, Chelsey Greene & the Greene Project, and the Terry Koger Quartet, as well as shows featuring Vivian Taylor, known for her acclaimed Phyllis Hyman tributes.  She’s been a background vocal artist for Nick Carr and Stoney Ellis.  She was the lead vocalist of well-known funk and R&B bands in the DMV.  Kim starred in the lead roles of local productions of the musicals “West Side Story” as “Maria” and in “Carnival” as “Lili”.  From 2021-2022, she was a lead role in “Queen of the People’s Hearts,” a musical about Diana, Princess of Wales, with performances at Capital Hall (Tysons, VA) and other venues qualifying her to be in “Playbill” and which was performed abroad.  Kim was the worship leader for the DC Grace Conferences, 2011-2013.

 

Michael Black is my husband.  Our daughters are Kristine and Kamille Wallace.  We live in the Maryland.

I've loved music all my life and have been a vocalist most of my life. My dad Benjamin Schubert, Baber, Jr., was a professional jazz organist in the Detroit, MI, area. Most of the music in my home was jazz. It's probably why I have a jazzy vocal sound. 

My Music

I'm creating some cool songs in various genres about this life we have with God. Spirit and truth can be expressed without using "God," or "Jesus Christ." Jesus Christ is the name above all names because He is the truth about God and who we are. I'm speaking about reality in Christ, not religion as some have made this to be. 

My first song about this is "YOUR NAME" that I wrote in 2015. I released it in January 2022. The song's music are on my YouTube channel  and homepage.

I'm working on a new song "WOKE LOVE" to express the difference in the love of the world and the love of God in Christ for all.

Singing Career

I've been the lead vocalist with some of the top bands in the DMV, specializing in R&B, funk, and jazz. I've had the opportunity to travel abroad. 

I was a vocalist with the former DC Grace Band.  We wrote and play songs about everyone's true identity as Jesus Christ for church services and conferences in the USA such as the annual Washington, DC Area Grace Conference.

In 2021, I was invited to be the opening act at Jazz in the Country 2021 in King George, VA, a great honor and very cool. Jeffrey Greenberg (piano), Marcus Hampton (drums), and Don Lacorte (bass) opened up with me. The festival headliners were the renowned jazz pianist Marcus Johnson and Chelsey Green and the Green Project.

In May 2022, I performed with The Terry Koger Quintet at a launch party for Karol Harmon's Jazz Flow Productions, a brand new company promoting the love of jazz and providing venues for jazz musicians to perform in the DMV (Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia) and beyond! 

Acting Career

My first acting experience was as a kid, creating and acting in plays my siblings and I wrote and performed for family, friends, and some just for ourselves in secret. 

Later in life, I was selected to play the lead roles in local productions of Broadway musicals. I was "Maria" in "West Side Story" and "Lili" in "Carnival." At Georgetown University, I was part of the cast of "Sidewinder" put on by their Mask and Bauble Dramatic Society.  

 I was honored to be a cast member in the musical "Queen of the People's Hearts" about the life of Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales, written and produced by Dr. Angela Knight and Randal Dewey. I sang the role of "The Daily Mail Reporter." We're "Playbill" for our performances at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, Manassas, VA (September 25, 2021 world premier) and the Capital One Hall, Tysons, VA (April 24, 2022). Some of the vocalists sing with the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center.

In August 2022, we performed the musical at the Zorlu Center, a world-renowned performing arts center in Istanbul, Turkey.

My Brand

An older gentleman and I were talking about life. I shared somethings with him. He said "You're a preacher!" I said "No! I'm a reacher." That's how the brand came to be. 

I love to reach, awaken, people from our dead thinking to life (Christ) abiding in all of us. We are the GodKind as I heard someone say. Christ Jesus is everything God believes about us. He is God's plan for your life.
